Spiral
A life measured by its own pace, not the clock’s.
Spiral is an outdoor installation against the pressure of the “social clock” — the scripted timeline that dictates when and how a life is supposed to happen. Sheets of translucent fabric hang from steel rings and a spiral rail; across them are printed memories the artist gathered from the five cities he has lived in — Taipei, Cologne, Dallas, New York and Shanghai.
A motion sensor answers the visitor’s presence with sound: moving between the curtains becomes a way of retracing a personal route through time, held not as deviation from a schedule but as a necessary passage of self-discovery. Detours are not failures — they are the shape of an authentic life.
Making
Memory photographs were sublimation-printed onto spandex fabric and suspended on a stainless-steel structure; an Arduino infrared sensor triggers a spatial sound score as visitors move through. The piece was shown outdoors at Green Park in Pudong, Shanghai, at a scale of 4 × 3 × 3 metres.
